Summer Academy Meeting

The Academy offers up to 80 scholarships per year to young dermatologists from countries outside the US and Canada to attend the Annual Meeting.  Recipients receive a stipend towards travel and housing, complimentary meeting registration, and admission to one postgraduate course – ticketed session at the Academy’s meeting.  Applicants must be dermatologists and endorsed by their national dermatologic society.  A maximum of two scholarships are awarded for each country.  These scholarships increase the quality of dermatologic education, disseminate research throughout the world, and provide educational opportunities to international dermatologists.

Held on Sunday morning, over the course of three hours, the Plenary session includes the award recipients for the Clarence S. Livingood, MD Award and Lectureship, the Marion B. Sulzberger, MD Memorial Award and Lectureship, the Lila Gruber Memorial Cancer Research Award and Lectureship, the Eugene J. Van Scott Award for Innovative Therapy of the Skin, the Phillip Frost Leadership Lecture, and the guest speaker.  The Plenary session averages 2,500-3,000 attendees.

The Global Networking Center is a specially-designated area in the convention center with comfortable lounge-type seating, where international meeting attendees have the opportunity to relax, to network and to meet up with their colleagues from around the world.  A multi-lingual representative – international concierge – from the city greets international attendees and assists with questions, information about the city and the meeting.  There is also daily delivery of a selection of international newspapers (may not be available in some destinations).  Electrical outlets are provided for attendees to plug in laptops, cell phone chargers, or other devices so they are never low on power at the meeting. 

Hometown Radio promotes the expertise of dermatologists to their communities. Dermatologists work with a professional broadcaster and producer to share important skin, hair and nail news by recording a 60-second radio interview on-site at the Annual Meeting.  After taping, each interview is edited and transmitted to radio stations in the dermatologist’s local market.  Thirty to 60 Academy members are interviewed for Hometown Radio and their interviews reach an estimated 200 million people.

This opportunity is ideal for corporate supporters whose objective is to increase visibility of their company with Academy members and the media who report on dermatology.  Hosted by the chair of the Council on Communications and the Academy president, the luncheon provides an opportunity for the Academy to thank the media for educating the public about the importance of skin, hair and nail health, and motivating them to take action to improve their quality of life.   Approximately 150 people, including the media, SKIN Faculty members and the Board of Directors attend the buffet lunch which is held on Saturday during the Annual Meeting.

This course is targeted to dermatologists preparing for the American Board of Dermatology (ABD) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) in Dermatology exam.  The monitors allow the approximately 300 attendees to view the slides in a close-up format.

The sessions are structured in a question and answer format that will provide participants immediate feedback so they can identify any areas of weakness that require further self-directed study.  The monitors in the session allow attendees to view the slides in a close-up format.  Registration for the majority of the eight MOC sessions averages 200 attendees.

Approximately 500 Academy members are invited to the Leadership and Mentoring Reception.  This reception is a great opportunity for up and coming leaders in dermatology to expand their network of contacts with experienced Academy leaders and connect with their colleagues in a relaxed setting.  Invitees include: Academy Board of Directors, AAD/A Council chairs, current and past participants and mentors of the Leadership Forum and Academic Dermatology Leadership programs.  A reception is held at the Annual Meeting and at the Summer Academy Meeting.

Live patient demonstrations allow attendees the opportunity to view a wide variety of procedures as performed by the leading experts.  Typically, more than 300 board-certified dermatologists attend each of the three live patient demonstrations.

Approximately 40 attendees learn how to successfully craft and deliver key messages by participating in mock media interviews designed to challenge participants to stay focused while delivering their messages.

In this popular scientific session, residents go through a self-assessment in a familiar, engaging game show format.  Questions and image-based inquires encompassing the breadth of dermatology are posed to contestants in a friendly competition arrangement.  Approximately 250 Residents attend Resident Jeopardy.

The remainder of the 300+ scientific sessions held at the Annual Meeting can require standard audio/video equipment (e.g. LCD/Screen, networked room, microphones, and AV technician). 

The Guest Speaker at the Academy’s Summer Academy Meeting presents during the Plenary Session on Friday morning for 30 minutes.  This is a high-profile individual from the healthcare or other industries.  Opportunity for a “meet and greet” in the “Green Room,” as well as book signings (if applicable) are available.

Held on Friday morning, over the course of three hours, the Plenary session includes the award recipient for the Everett C. Fox, MD Memorial Lectureship, the President’s Address, up to four (4) didactic lectures on special cases in dermatology, and the guest speaker.  The Plenary session averages 1,200 attendees.

The sessions are structured in a question and answer format that will provide participants immediate feedback so they can identify any areas of weakness that require further self-directed study.  The monitors in the session allow for attendees to view the slides in a close up format.  Registration for the majority of the four MOC sessions averages 200 attendees.
